The Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled the Marine Tsunami Warning for the NSW coast however a Hazardous Surf Warning is in place for the Batemans and Eden Coast today.
Local residents on the south coast were issued with a Tsunami warning from the BOM just after 8:30pm on Saturday, after an underwater volcano erupted near Tonga.
While the warnings have been cancelled and beaches in the Eurobodalla and Bega Valley reopened, NSW SES and Surf LifeSaving NSW are urging people on the south coast to take care around the beach in case dangerous surf conditions continue today and in coming days.
Unit Commander at Batemans Bay SES Kevin Sheppard told East Coast Radio local should still be vigilant around our waterways.
“With the tsunami warning being cancelled, still be mindful of strong currents and surf conditions over the next couple of days,” Mr Sheppard said.
“If another tsunami water does come in, don’t go down to the water,” he said.
“Adhere to all the advice that’s being given out by the authorities and steer clear of all the coastal area.”
